Calculated Risk Racing Team Battles the Desert: Resilience, Grit, and Bullite Toughness

In the world of off-road racing, success isn’t just about speed — it’s about overcoming the unexpected. That’s exactly what Ben and Tiff Protas of Calculated Risk Racing Team demonstrated in their latest race, where their relentless determination and their Bullite-equipped car faced intense challenges, turning what could have been a race-ending disaster into a story of grit and resilience.

Day 1: A Strong Start, A Tough Hit

The first race day began with Ben and Joe Kearns, who handled navigation duties, starting dead last in a row of five cars. As soon as the flag dropped, they blasted through road crossings at 85-90 mph, picking off competitors one by one. Everything seemed lined up for a top finish — until disaster struck.

While navigating a rutted left-hand turn, a massive rock was flung into their path. With no time to react, they hit it hard — so hard that Ben thought they’d blown both a front and rear tire. “The car was handling like crap,” Ben shared, but instead of stopping in the desert for a tire change, they pushed through to the pits.

The Damage Report:

  • One bent rim (still usable!)

  • Two blown CV boots

  • CV joints on the verge of failing

At the hot pit, Tiff Protas took charge, ensuring the team got the quick repairs they needed to get back on track. Despite the setbacks, the team kept going — finishing the race with determination and grit.

Day 2: Fighting Until the End

After a long night of repairs, the team returned for Day 2, fully prepped with new axles and fresh tires. Starting from Row 11, they launched off the line with confidence, leaving the competition behind.

Lap 1: Everything ran smoothly as they gained momentum on the course.

Lap 2: Just before the Fox Proving Grounds, their front axle snapped and flew out of the car. Down to two-wheel drive, Ben and Tiff kept pushing.

They were setting a strong pace entering Lap 3 until a mechanical issue at Mile 5 forced them to pull off the course, ending what could have been a podium-worthy run.

Bullite Toughness Tested & Proven

Despite the challenges, one thing never quit: their Bullite Wheels.

The brutal rock hit on Day 1 caused only a slight bend in the rim — an impact that would have destroyed any other wheel. Ben shared, “These rims are so badass! We can still run the rim!”

Looking Ahead

Behind every successful race team is a mix of grit, preparation, and teamwork. With Tiff managing quick repairs in the pits and Joe expertly navigating, the Calculated Risk Racing Team showed why they’re a force to be reckoned with.

With repairs underway and lessons learned, Ben and Tiff Protas are ready to come back stronger than ever. Their never-quit attitude and Bullite Wheels’ proven toughness will fuel their next run toward victory.

Because in off-road racing, it’s not just about winning — it’s about calculated risks and unbreakable resolve.
